Time to Move

One of the major pieces of advice given out to all incoming first years by the Admissions Committee is to move in early, preferably as early as 3 weeks before orientation starts. Don't arrive the day before, they say, so that you have time to get settled, set up cable, move your stuff in, etc before classes start. You might even miss out on lifelong friends, they seem to ominously suggest.

I, of course, chose to ignore the advice, as did several others of my classmates, due to circumstances outside of my control. Mrs. Connecticut Yankee, my wife, finished Culinary School in New York the Tuesday before orientation. This made an arrival prior to the weekend before orientation nigh impossible. So we planned to move in the weekend before together, and then she'd continue getting things arranged the rest of the week.

Still, that was better than at least two classmates, who decided the end of July would be a great time to get married, considering that most business schools start mid-late August, giving them enough time for a honeymoon before starting school. Yeah, right. Not here with our Aug 2 start date...

So Mrs. Connecticut Yankee did the best she could, but with new furniture purchases to be made, pools to be built, plumbers/handymen/laundrymen to be appointed with, it was too much for a 7 day time frame, so much lingered. In the few weeks since, I've been dealing with all that jazz ever since.
